How High School GPA Works
High schools across the US use both **unweighted** and **weighted** calculations. Unweighted scores treat every class equally up to 4.0, while weighted scores reward academic rigor by granting extra points:
- Standard College-Prep Classes: Max 4.0 points ($A = 4.0$, $B = 3.0$).
- Honors Classes: $+0.5$ bonus points ($A = 4.5$, $B = 3.5$).
- Advanced Placement (AP) & International Baccalaureate (IB): $+1.0$ bonus points ($A = 5.0$, $B = 4.0$).
How College Admissions Officers Evaluate Your GPA
Admissions officers at institutions like the University of California (UC), Michigan, and Florida do not simply take your high school's reported GPA at face value. They perform a standardized GPA recalculation:
Colleges strip away non-academic electives (gym, driver's ed, teacher's assistant) and recalculate only core English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Language courses.
A 3.8 unweighted GPA with 6 AP courses is almost universally preferred over a 4.0 unweighted GPA composed exclusively of basic introductory classes.
