How Cumulative GPA is Calculated

Many students make the mistake of averaging their semester GPAs directly. However, because semesters often have different credit loads (e.g., 12 credits in fall vs. 18 credits in spring), cumulative GPA must be calculated by totaling all quality points:

Cumulative GPA = (Prior Quality Points + Current Semester Quality Points) ÷ (Prior Credits + Current Semester Credits)

Worked Mathematical Example

Past Record: 45 completed credit hours with a 3.20 GPA.

Prior Quality Points = 45 × 3.20 = 144.0

Current Semester: 15 credit hours with a 3.80 GPA.

Current Quality Points = 15 × 3.80 = 57.0

Total Quality Points = 144.0 + 57.0 = 201.0
Total Credits = 45 + 15 = 60.0
New Cumulative GPA = 201.0 ÷ 60.0 = 3.35
